How do you repair jewellery that has gemstones already set in them?

For heat resistant gemstones

This generally includes diamond, ruby and sapphire. They normally do not have to be removed before the metal is soldered or repaired. To further protect these stones, we recommend the use of Thermo Gel to protect areas not requiring heat during soldering e.g. stones, areas of metal or solder joints. To use, the gel is liberally applied to the area and once soldering is complete, it is easily washed off.

For non heat resistant gemstones

Most gemstones can break or damage if exposed to heat, so must be removed before heat is applied. If the stone is in a claw setting, then you could use a prong lifter to raise and lift the claws on the setting.
